FAQ
Do I need work experience to take an ASE exam?
Yes. To earn ASE certification, you must pass the exam AND meet the work experience requirement. Most exams require two years of relevant on-the-job experience. If you have a two-year automotive degree from an accredited program, one year of experience may be substituted for one of the two required years.
Where do I take the ASE exam?
ASE exams are administered at Prometric Testing Centers across the country. You can register and find a location near you at ase.com. Superior Automotive Training can guide you through the registration process.
How much does an ASE exam cost?
Exam fees vary by test and are set by ASE/Prometric. Visit ase.com for current pricing. Some employers offer reimbursement for exam fees as part of technician development programs.
How long do I have to prepare?
That depends on your experience level. Technicians with hands-on experience in the relevant area often need a few weeks of focused test prep. Those newer to the subject may benefit from longer preparation. Our instructors will give you an honest assessment of what to expect.
What happens if I don't pass?
You can retake an ASE exam. ASE will provide a score report that shows which content areas you need to work on — and our instructors can help you focus your prep before your next attempt.
Do certifications expire?
Yes. ASE certifications must be renewed every five years. Recertification tests are typically shorter than the initial exam. We also offer prep for recertification to help you renew your credentials.
