About ASE
When you see the ASE logo, you’re seeing a mark that has represented the gold standard of automotive service since 1972. ASE — the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence — is the independent, nonprofit organization that tests, certifies, and credentials automotive professionals across the United States.
For over 50 years, ASE has protected consumers and elevated the automotive industry by ensuring that the technicians working on their vehicles have proven, tested knowledge.
Why ASE Was Created
Before ASE existed, there was no reliable way for consumers to tell the difference between a skilled technician and an unskilled one. Founded on June 12, 1972, in Washington, D.C., ASE was created specifically to solve that problem — giving drivers a trusted way to identify qualified professionals, and giving technicians a recognized credential to prove their expertise.
Today, ASE is the only nationally recognized, industry-wide technician certification program in the United States.
What Is ASE Certification?
ASE certification is a professional credential awarded by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence that confirms an automotive technician has the knowledge and skills to perform quality vehicle repair and service.
Think of it like a medical board certification — it’s not enough to say you can do the work. You have to prove it through a standardized, industry-developed exam.
How Does ASE Certification Work?
Earning an ASE certification requires two things:
Once you meet both requirements, you’re officially ASE Certified in that area of specialty. To keep your certification active, you must retest every five years.
Our Results Speak for Themselves
Students who train with Superior Automotive Training pass their ASE exams. Our reviews tell the story — technicians with no prior exam experience earn certifications, and those preparing to retest improve their scores. Some of our students have earned six or more ASE certifications through our program.
Why Should You Get ASE Certified?
ASE certification is one of the most impactful investments a technician can make in their career. Here’s why it matters — for you, your employer, and the customers you serve.

ASE's Mission
ASE’s mission has never changed: to improve the quality of vehicle repair and service through the testing and certification of automotive professionals. Every exam ASE produces is developed by working industry experts and reflects the real tasks that technicians perform on the job — not just textbook theory.
When a technician earns an ASE certification, it means they have demonstrated hands-on knowledge that meets the standards of the automotive industry.
